Scenic Highway Information Meetings Cancelled

Due to the recent impacts of Tropical Storm Fay, the River of Lakes Heritage Corridor Scenic Highway Corridor Advocacy Group (CAG) has cancelled its upcoming evening community information meetings scheduled for:

August 28, 2008 at the Pioneer Settlement, Barberville
September 4, 2008 at Deltona City Hall

In lieu of these information meetings, the public is welcome to attend the CAG’s regular monthly meetings, held the second Monday of each month at 8:30 a.m. at the Volusia County Administration Building in DeLand. The next scheduled CAG meeting will be on September 8. For more on the vision and goals of the River of Lakes Heritage Corridor Scenic Highway, visit www.river-of-lakes.com or call Renee Tallevast at 386-734-0162.

Background:
In 2005, the River of Lakes Heritage Corridor partnership committee seized an opportunity through the Florida Scenic Highway Program that could potentially give its 15 West Volusia communities access to millions of dollars in federal and state funding for enhancement, preservation and beautification projects. The Heritage Corridor formed the CAG to seek designation for U.S. Highway 17 and 17/92 from the St. Johns River Bridge to the Putnam County line, including several ancillary roads such as CR 3, CR 4053 (Grand Avenue), CR 4110 (Old New York Avenue), CR 5758 (Enterprise/Osteen Road), CR 4139, SR 415, and SR 11 that provide access to valuable intrinsic resources.

The first-phase eligibility application was approved last fall by the Florida Department of Transportation’s Scenic Highway Advisory Committee. The second phase of the application process is well underway. The CAG has formulated specific goals, objectives and strategies and is now creating an action plan for the ongoing management of the scenic highway. Final designation is expected in February, 2009.
